Leadership, service, and relationship-building have been the hallmark of Brigadier General (Retired) Gary M Profit’s life and career. First, in his distinguished 31-year career in the U.S. Army, then in a second career at Walmart Inc, and now as a business owner at Profit Leadership Consulting. Gary brings all his experience together as he partners with non-profit organizations and private sector businesses that focus on members of our nation’s military, veterans, and the families who serve and sacrifice alongside them. He develops leaders of character within companies and non-profits as they each work to further their respective organizational missions.
His previous service and leadership give a glimpse into a man who wants to take where he’s been to move others forward.
Military Service
Commissioned Second Lieutenant in 1974 through the Reserve Officers’ Training Corps, Gary held assignments in the 4th Battalion, 20th Field Artillery; at the U.S. Army Reserve Personnel Center; in the Office of the Chief, Army Reserve (OCAR); in the Office of the Chief of Staff, Army; in the Office of the Secretary of the Army; and at Special Operations Command South, Republic of Panama, before commanding the 9602nd Command and Control Headquarters Brigade/651st Area Support Group.
Returning to the National Capital Region, he served as Director, Public Affairs and Liaison Directorate and Director, Chief Army Reserve Staff Group, OCAR, before being promoted to General Officer. His uniformed military career culminated with a capstone assignment as Deputy Chief, Army Reserve/Deputy Commander, U.S. Army Reserve Command for Management, Resources and Support.
Gary’s military awards and decorations include Distinguished Service Medal, Legion of Merit with oak leaf cluster (OLC), Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal with three OLC, Joint Service Commendation Medal, Army Commendation Medal with two OLC, Joint Service Achievement Medal, Army Achievement Medal, Army Staff Identification Badge, and Parachutist Badge.
Civilian Career
Gary retired from military service on February 28, 2006. For two years, he served as Director of Human Capital Management Solutions, leading lifecycle human capital
management technology and service solutions; International Programs, leading international technology transfer and export control solutions; and Department of Defense Business Transformation Agency Programs, leading strategic communications service solutions, in the Civilian/Homeland Security Division of General Dynamics Information Technology.
In October 2008, Gary joined Walmart, the world’s largest retailer, as Senior Director of Military Programs. In this role, he directed a synchronized enterprise strategy and implemented programs to attract, recruit, and hire; grow and develop; and retain talent from military community constituencies. He also led a collaborative team of military people brand and corporate and consumer reputation professionals focused on veterans and military families.
Throughout his 12 years at Walmart, Gary was highly regarded as an innovative and entrepreneurial leader who made a powerful impact on thousands of veterans and their families. In 2015, he was named by the National Retail Federation Foundation to The List of People Shaping Retail’s Future.
Upon retiring from Walmart in January 2020, Gary founded Profit Leadership Consulting.
Volunteer Service
Much of Gary’s volunteer service stems from his professional passions. Arkansas Governor Asa Hutchinson appointed him to the Arkansas Veterans Commission. He also serves on the Board of Directors of The Flag and General Officers’ Network and the Executive Advisory Council of Mission: Readiness Military Leaders for Kids, and previously served on the Advisory Board of the Beck Center for Veterans (formerly Beck PRIDE Center for America’s Wounded Veterans) at Arkansas State University.
Education and Personal Life
A Michigan native, Gary is a graduate of Ypsilanti High School. He received a BS in Economics from Eastern Michigan University, an MBA from the University of Michigan, and an MS in National Security and Strategic Studies from the College of Naval Warfare, Naval War College.
He is a life member of the Association of the U.S. Army, Military Officers Association of America, Reserve Organization of America, Senior Army Reserve Commanders Association, and Alumni Association of the University of Michigan.
Gary and his wife, Patricia, have two children and five grandchildren. The couple continues to live in Northwest Arkansas.
