Army Specialist Alan N. Bean of Bridport, Vermont joined the Army National Guard in 2000 and attended boot camp in Fort Knox, Kentucky. He also attended Advanced Individualized Training in Edgewood, Maryland. He eagerly served in Operation Iraqi Freedom in 2004 as "he felt that fighting over there would keep us from fighting them over here." He was assigned to the Army National Guard's 1st Battalion, 86th Field Artillery. He was killed during an attack on Forward Operating Base Kalsu in Iskandariyah, Iraq on May 25, 2004. Bean was part of a group of soldiers who were preparing to return to their base after escorting a military intelligence detail. He was killed in a mortar attack on the group. He and Kevin Sheehan, who died in the same attack, were the first Vermont National Guard combat casualties in decades. He left behind a son whom he never got to meet as he was born the day he arrived in Iraq. Alan was posthumously promoted to Sergeant and awarded the Bronze Star and Purple Heart.
